At Rowlatts Mead, our aim when teaching Design and Technology is to ensure our children receive a curriculum which allows them to exercise their creativity and problem-solving, both as individuals and as members of a team. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to investigate, design, make, and evaluate products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants, and values. Through Design & Technology activities, they will become more aware of the modern world and the impact technology has on everyday life.
We teach essential designing and making skills progressively to ensure all children have the opportunity to gradually build on prior knowledge, practice these skills, and develop confidence as they move through the school. Design and Technology at Rowlatts Mead allows children to apply the knowledge and skills learned in other subjects, particularly Maths, Science, and Art. Children’s interests are captured through themed learning, ensuring that links are made in a cross-curricular way, giving children motivation and meaning for their learning, therefore making it purposeful.
Through the Design and Technology curriculum, we aim to provide opportunities for children to further enhance their character development. Risk-taking, resilience, communication, responsibility, and teamwork are essential life skills, and through the Design and Technology sequence of lessons, children will be encouraged to apply these character traits when completing projects. These will particularly support children when using various tools and materials that may be new to them, whilst also ensuring children are aware of how to handle tools and equipment safely.
