At Rowlatts Mead, we believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. Our aim is to ensure pupils develop a secure understanding of the fundamentals of maths so that they are confident, fluent and ready to tackle new learning as they move through school and beyond.

Our Approach

  • Mastery for all – We follow a mastery approach to maths where pupils build deep and lasting knowledge of key concepts. New learning is broken into small, connected steps to secure understanding and avoid gaps.

  • Fluency at the core – Daily fluency sessions ensure that essential number facts and calculation skills are embedded. Pupils practise and revisit these regularly so they can recall and apply knowledge quickly and accurately.

  • Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) model – Children explore mathematical concepts with practical resources, progress to pictorial representations, and then move to abstract methods. This structured approach helps them understand not just how to solve problems, but why strategies work.

  • Reasoning and problem solving – Once confident with the fundamentals, pupils are challenged to apply their skills to increasingly complex reasoning and problem-solving tasks. They are encouraged to use precise mathematical language, make connections across topics and explain their thinking clearly.

In the Classroom

  • Daily calculation walk-throughs give children repeated opportunities to practise and refine methods, strengthening their fluency and confidence.

  • Lessons are carefully structured to ensure pupils revisit prior knowledge while making links to new learning.

  • Children are supported to persevere with challenges, reflect on mistakes and see themselves as resilient mathematicians.

Supporting Learning at Home

To help pupils strengthen key skills beyond the classroom, we use:

  • Times Tables Rock Stars – supporting rapid recall of multiplication and division facts.

  • NumBots – building strong foundations in number bonds, addition and subtraction through engaging practice.

Our Commitment

By embedding fluency and working towards mastery in all areas of maths, we prepare pupils not only for the next phase of their education but also to use mathematics with confidence in everyday life. Our goal is for every child at Rowlatts Mead to leave primary school as a capable, curious and resilient mathematician.
